How often do you catch yourself in a negative judgement about others?
We all do it.
But, how to break the habit?
When a young Richard Branson spoke about someone in a negative manner, his parents would make him face a mirror and repeat it. They wanted him to visualise the negative energy he was creating.
An ex-girlfriend used to remind me: when you point a finger at someone, four fingers point back at you.
Using this idea has been one of the most powerful tools for my own development. Whenever I catch myself criticising someone else, as soon as I can, I stop to ask myself:
How do I engage in exactly what I’m accusing this person of doing?
I’ll be honest, this can be tough. You have to admit to your own projections. It might also take a while for you to see exactly how you’re like them, but it is super effective.
Do you think you or leaders in your organisation could benefit from greater powers of self reflection?
Then we’d love to talk to you.
